Square E Farms is our family’s 37-acre farm in the Atkins community of Lynchburg, South Carolina. It is the land where Farmer Charles and our family built a home, raised generations, grew food, worked together, and created memories that continue to shape who we are.

For generations, farming was part of our family’s everyday life. The land produced tobacco, corn, soybeans, collards, cabbage, okra, onions, muscadine grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, and other foods that nourished our family and community. Farming was more than a business—it was survival, responsibility, family connection, and a way of life.

Our present farm was once part of a much larger 115-acre family homestead, Circle E Farms. Like many Black farming families, ours faced barriers that made it difficult to continue. After Farmer Charles was denied access to the financing needed to sustain the farm, much of the original land was sold. Active farming gradually slowed, but the land, the memories, and the responsibility remained.

In 2023, our family began actively restoring Square E Farms. We are clearing and caring for the property, rebuilding soil, growing seasonal produce, preserving family plants, documenting our elders’ stories, and reconnecting younger generations to the land.

Today, Square E Farms is becoming more than a working farm. We envision it as a living classroom and community gathering place where farming, food, family history, youth education, wellness, cultural preservation, and meaningful conversation can grow together.

We are not starting from scratch. We are starting from our roots.
